Refuelling
The ideal location for AdBlue® tank systems
Double-walled, overfill-proof and impermeable to liquids - the requirements an AdBlue® tank system has to meet depend on the volume, location and environmental guidelines. When purchasing an AdBlue® tank system, there are a few things to consider. In this article, you will learn how to store the urea solution safely and how to benefit from your AdBlue® tank system.
to the productThe right location
You should avoid direct sunlight falling on the tank system, as the urea concentration of AdBlue® drops at temperatures above 30°C. The location must not be too cold either, because the urea solution freezes at -11°C. AdBlue® is therefore not a particularly demanding substance. The chemical substance copes perfectly with common temperatures between -5°C and +20°C.
You can easily place AdBlue® containers outdoors. It’s a good idea to place your storage container near kerbs, crash barriers and large boulders as this guarantees collision protection.
The optimal material
Tank systems made of stainless steel or approved plastic (such as polyethylene) mean you are always on the safe side. Steel containers are unsuitable for storing AdBlue® because the urea causes it to rust. If the tank system has a volume greater than 1000 litres, the tank must be double-walled or have a retention volume.
Observing water protection law
AdBlue® is chemically harmless, but slightly hazardous to water. For this reason, operators and owners of AdBlue® tank systems are obliged to comply with water protection regulations. What you need to consider when filling the tank systems, such as whether splash protection walls are necessary and how you should deal with contaminated water, is laid out in the technical regulation, TRwS 781.
Important: Make absolutely sure that AdBlue® does not get into the light oil separator or the severage system. A liquid-impermeable filling surface is mandatory when refuelling.
Retention volume - do you need one or not?
In principle, a retention volume is always required when refuelling and storing AdBlue®. Exceptions can be found in the TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH service rules and regulations. No retention volume is required at the filling area, for example, if the filling hose cannot be driven over, the locking catch on the nozzle is removed and an immobiliser is used on the tank truck.
