5 professional tips for your irrigation set-up

Carrots, onions, cabbage, lettuce - in order for field vegetables and crops to reach the shops, the market and all our plates, they need plenty of care and lots and lots of water. With our professional irrigation tips, you can prepare your harvest optimally for the coming season. This means that even long periods of drought won’t harm a good harvest result.

1 professional tip: Water at night

Contrary to popular opinion, we do not recommend providing plants with water in the evening, as the ground is still warm then. The best time for watering is between three and four o'clock at night. Because when it’s coolest, less water evaporates. If you don't want to get up early, irrigate alternatively in the early morning hours. This ensures that valuable water ends up exactly where it is needed - at the roots of kohlrabi, potatoes and cherry trees.

2 Use rainwater

Collect rainwater and use it to water fruit and vegetables. This will save you money and do the environment a good turn. Rainwater offers another benefit: in contrast to tap water, it is less calcareous and contains no additives, such as chlorine or fluorine. Some plants react very sensitively to these components. A large storage tank with a pump is ideal for storing useful and healthy rainwater.

3 Water generously

Thriftiness may well be a virtue, but you should be generous when watering plants. Since some of the water evaporates at the surface anyway, it’s alright to have more liquid. It’s better to water the soil abundantly once rather than apply a little water a few times. Make sure to water in the root area and not only to wet the leaves. In this way, you will prevent sun damage, fungal infestation and the water will reach the roots via the soil.

4 Water precisely

Water consumption varies depending on the location and type of plant. Wheat requires less water than millet. Asparagus needs to be watered much more often than potatoes. For plants with leaves, the following generally applies: the larger the leaves, the higher the water consumption of the plant. In the case of different crops, they ultimately ensure more economical water consumption and a better yield.

5 Use a mobile irrigation system

To ensure even and efficient water distribution, we recommend the use of a mobile irrigation system. Drums from CEMO can be filled with up to 6,000 litres of water. A motor or electric pump and swivel hose reel ensure flexible deployment in the field. This not only benefits your harvest, but also you thanks to the simplified work processes.
